Being Alone is Less Scary

I’m scared of relationships now.
Not in a dramatic way. In a very real way.
I’ve learned what they cost me.
I’ve watched how quickly people judge each other.
How easily they decide who you are without knowing you.
How casually they say things that cut — and then just move on.
I don’t think people realize how cruel they can be.
Or maybe they do, and it just doesn’t matter to them.
After enough hurt, you stop walking into relationships hopeful.
You walk in waiting for the damage.
You brace yourself without even realizing you’re doing it.
That makes letting people in really hard.
I’ve done the math.
The risk.
The fallout.
How long it takes me to recover afterward.
And at some point, you stop calling that strength.
You call it too much.
Being alone isn’t what I wanted.
It’s just where the cost is lower.
With my dogs, there’s no judgment.
No cruelty.
No aftermath.
It’s that pain taught me to be careful — and I’m done pretending that lesson didn’t matter.

It’s not that I don’t want connection.
It’s that solitude hurts less than being hurt again.
